"I love seeing how I progress when I work hard.
I love the atmosphere"
Full time mum/ carer to a severely autistic (amongst an array of other issues) child who is 7 (she's often challenging but also a delight and has changed my perspectives on many things). I also have a 13 year old and I'm married to the most supportive man. I love running and boxing it all helps with time for me and time to unspool the mind. I'm determined and have great willpower, if I don't get something straight away I shall keep trying until I get it. I'm no quitter, it's not in my nature. I'm very supportive of others and always happy for other people.
What age did you start pole fitness with Pole Dynamics? 32
How long have you been pole dancing? 10-11 months
What made you start pole fitness?
I have always thought it looked amazing! I was a little consumed by illness (husband) for about 3 years and after he was given the gift of life I told myself I'd not be afraid of things anymore and put myself outside of my comfort zone and live like you only have one life, because you really do! The family life I have meant (with illness) and still does mean with L that what I would like doesn't come into things but I mentioned it to hubby and with his support and obviously encouragement from you Hannah when I messaged you I signed up, I was so nervous but without any need as it was fine.
What’s kept you coming back/what do you love the most about your hobby?
I love the way everyone supports each other I've not experienced any nastiness from anyone and the instructors are very good at what they teach and take the time to help you get it right. I love seeing how I progress when I I work hard. I love the atmosphere! Pole days are my favourite days. It's also proven to me that my body is strong even if I used to think it let me down at certain points in my life. It's not letting me down when I'm hanging upside down and using strength to do so.
The instructors are very supportive and it's a completely non-judgmental environment which for someone like me who isn't very confident in my own skin it's crucial. I feel this is a very important factor to me signing up course after course in fact, I'm so taken with this aspect that I actually do two classes a week!
What’s your biggest pole achievement?
Wearing shorts and showing my stomach ;-) no really in terms of pole moves maybe flying eagle it's not perfect but it's getting there and for a long time I couldn't do it at all. Also Scorpio and outside leg hang. I've also fallen in love with (and can remember!) combos, give me a pair of leg warmers I turn into a dancer (in my head).
What’s your favourite trick?
I never remember the names so I shall send you pics of my favourite tricks. I seem to love the ones that took me longest to learn. It's quite a buzz when you get something you've worked hard for.
What would you say to anyone thinking about starting pole fitness?
Don't overthink it, just turn up and give it a go! I guarantee you will see it's different to what you thought it would be, it's hard but equally rewarding. Pole fitness has taught me that all shapes and sizes can pole and be really good at it. It's now proudly one of my obsessions along with my running. You only regret what you don't try, and yes everyone is nervous the first time.
